Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different is Scotland, Ireland Wales and England. Christmas is a great English national holiday and in Scotland it is not observed at all. But six days later, on New Year's Eve the Scotts begin to enjoy themselves. All the shops and factories are closed on New Year's Day. People invite friends to their houses. Greetings and presents are offered.
A new tradition has been born in Britain. Every year a large number of ancient motor-cars drive from London to Brighton. Some of these veteran cars look very funny. This run from London to Brighton is a colourful demonstration. People are dressed in the clothes of those times.
It is not a race, and most of the cars come to Brighton, which is sixty miles from London, only in the evening.

Aim 1. Повідомлення теми та мети уроку.
Т: The topic of our today's lesson is "O'Henry, a great American writer". By the end of the lesson you should be able:
* to listen and understand the gist and details of the text despite the natural difficulties;
* to identify details from the text for reading;
* to discuss Task 7 of your Home Reading.
Warm-up 2. Уведення в іншомовну атмосферу.
1) Discussion. Робота з висловлюваннями про книгу.
Т: Read the statements about books by Oscar Wilde and discuss the given topic.
(HO ): Statements about Books
Books, I believe, may be devided into three groups: books to read; books to re-read; books not read at all.
The third class is the most important. To tell people what to read is, as a rule, either useless or harmful. But to tell people what riot to read is a very different matter.
It is indeed necessary in this age of ours, an age that reads so much that it has no time to admire, and that writes so much that it has no time to think. Whoever will select "The Worst Hundred Books" and publish a list of them will do the rising generation a real and lasting service.
(After O. Wilde)
a) Conversation.
T: Do you agree that there are three groups of books: books you must read; books you must re-read; books you must not read at all?
Which is the largest and the smallest group? Why?
How do you choose a book to read?
What books do you re-read?
How do you know what books not to read at all?
Do you agree that a list of the "Worst Hundred Books" may be useful?
б) Here are some messages from a book review: "It is not a book to throw aside lightly, it is a book to throw away with great force". Haveyou ever read such books? What are they?
в) Make your own list of ten best books to read and speak about your choice. With your partner. Compare your lists.

(H03): O'Henry
O'Henry, a great American writer, is famous for his short stories. His real name was William Sidney Porter.
He was born in the South-Eastern part of the USA in a doctor's family in 1862. At the age of 15 he began to work. He worked for 11 years as a salesman, a reporter and an editor of a magazine.
Then he worked in a bank. Some time later he was accused of stealing money from the bank. But that was not true. Yet he was put into prison for three and half years. He began to write his short stories and prison. O'Henry is famous for his short stories with a happy end. His style is full of humor and belief in life.
Most of his stories are about life in big cities, farms and small towns of America. His favourite hero is always the ordinary little man of America whom he always defended in his stories.
O'Henry is also famous for his plays and sketches. His sketches have as a rule a most unusual ending. They are both sad and funny, like the one about a young unemployed husband who sells his watch to buy his wife a beautiful comb for her lovely hair. The wife, wishing to make her husband a present, having no money, sells her beautiful long hair to buy him a chain for his watch.
